All is well. We are presently anchored in Daliconi Bay, Bay of Islands, Northern Lau Group of Fiji. We enjoyed an absolutely blistering 10-knot reach across the Nanuku Passage in 18 to 20 knots of wind and a short wind chop. We covered the 56 nautical miles reach in just under 6 hours in the company of 8 other boats who also took advantage of a brief weather transition to get across.
We ran a full main and the Code 65 with half daggers for most of the route, reefing the main and changing to the Solent as the wind shifted to the south. Despite the dreary, rainy day, I can’t remember a sail I enjoyed this much. It’s fun to be in close proximity to so many other boats. Everyone sailing fast making the most of these great conditions.
We’re here to soak up the spectacular scenery and friendly locals of the Northern Lau Group for the next few weeks. For now, it’s time for a hot shower and a good night’s sleep.
